Write Like This: Teaching Real-World Writing Through Modeling & Mentor Texts
Book Overview
If you want to learn how to shoot a basketball, you begin by carefully observing someone who knows how to shoot a basketball. If you want to be a writer, you begin by carefully observing the work of accomplished writers. Recognizing the importance that modeling plays in the learning process, high school English teacher Kelly Gallagher shares how he gets his students to stand next to and pay close attention to model writers, and how doing so elevates his students' writing abilities. Write Like This is built around a central premise: if students are to grow as writers, they need to read good writing, they need to study good writing, and, most important, they need to emulate good writers.
In Write Like This, Kelly emphasizes real-world writing purposes, the kind of writing he wants his students to be doing twenty years from now. Each chapter focuses on a specific discourse: express and reflect, inform and explain, evaluate and judge, inquire and explore, analyze and interpret, and take a stand/propose a solution. In teaching these lessons, Kelly provides mentor texts (professional samples as well as models he has written in front of his students), student writing samples, and numerous assignments and strategies proven to elevate student writing.
By helping teachers bring effective modeling practices into their classrooms, Write Like This enables students to become better adolescent writers. More important, the practices found in this book will help our students develop the writing skills they will need to become adult writers in the real world.

Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
I teach high school ELLs to write. I feel like I've floundered for years and then came this book on my way. This is a real resource with tons of downloadable lessons on fantasy writing, real-world. I use it almost exclusively in my classroom and I have seen an enormous improvement in my students'writing and engagement. I can only recommend this book ''.

Well Worth It
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
This is a good resource for those looking to clarify their own philosophy of teaching writing and perhaps sharpen their own. I like Gallagher's ideas and have used my own incarnations of some of them in my own classroom to good effect. My only Caveat - use of Mentor - texts takes practice. It is definitely a worthwhile and valid technique, but it takes finesse on the part of the teacher. Learning to use mentor texts was a very valuable, very personal journey as a writer myself, since I was willing to evaluate my own writing and teaching practices.

Good writing activities throughout
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
Reading a book or two about teaching is important to me as I continue to develop my teaching skills as a teacher. A few years ago, I read another book by Kelly Gallagher, so I wanted to read this one. I'm glad I did, because it offered many excellent tips on how to write better students. His main philosophy stems from these two premises : Teach children to write in the modes they will need to write in college and in the real world. Gallagher is a seasoned teacher who loves writing and teaching writing. He is a good mentor to have as I try to better equip my students to write. My only criticism is that there does not seem to be a frame around all these great activities.

In praise of Kelly Gallagher

Kelly Gallagher - Need I Say More As we all struggle to help our students meet Common Core, become good writers, develop independent reading skills, and learn to love reading and writing, any of the materials by Kelly Gallagher can serve as an incredible resource! Gallagher's books provide real-world instructions, ideas, samples and practical implementation strategies for all teachers. I have been using Gallagher's resources books for years and have seen an academic growth in my students and improved teaching skills in myself.

Some immediate ideas came to mind
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
The book is organized by writing for purposes such as to inform and explain or judge and to explain. However, you can use this completely, as I did, and ignore the ideas you want to use. I started with sharing the reasons to write an example with my students. The example of why it is important for a candidate of the State Police to use prepositions correctly was an eye-opener for them. This little gem was selected from the one chapter. There are many other examples and this is a quick read.

Not bad, but can be more teacher friendly

It is an interesting read and the principals are sound, but the texts cited can be further distinguished to provide models for reluctant writers.

A Unique, Helpful Look at the Role of the Writing Teacher
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
Gallagher offers one of the best teaching guides for writing, I know. At any grade level, the principles of this book will open the black box of academic writing and promote risk-taking in student work. The author's approach to teaching writing is three fold : 1) students must understand the reasons for writing, 2) teachers must model the writing process in front of students, and 3) students must interact with mentor texts to imitate and practice excellent forms. A reader would benefit enormously from scanning through the text alone for the teaching ideas. This reader, however, would miss an insightful explanation of the role of the writing teachers if she did not read the whole work.

Excellent source of practical ideas in the classroom

Excellent source of practical ideas for the classroom. My only concern was that Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Puente project, and I know that the analysis of their results gave inconclusive results.

Wish I could...write like this

Today I am ordering 10 copies for friends. This book is humbling, practical, entertaining and smart. I wish Kelly had been my teacher in high school or better yet my son and my daughter had. I love it.
