A creative writer's shelf should hold at least three essential books: a dictionary, a style guide, and Writing Fiction. Janet Burroway's best-selling classic is the most widely used creative writing text in America, and for more than three decades it has helped hundreds of thousands of students learn the craft. Now in its tenth edition, Writing Fiction is more accessible than ever for writers of all levels--inside or outside the classroom.

This new edition continues to provide advice that is practical, comprehensive, and flexible. Burroway's tone is personal and nonprescriptive, welcoming learning writers into the community of practiced storytellers. Moving from freewriting to final revision, the book addresses showing not telling, characterization, dialogue, atmosphere, plot, imagery, and point of view. It includes new topics and writing prompts, and each chapter now ends with a list of recommended readings that exemplify the craft elements discussed, allowing for further study. And the examples and quotations throughout the book feature a wide and diverse range of today's best and best-known creators of both novels and short stories.

   Great overview for beginner
I found this book very useful ''. I have read many other books related to story telling in the written medium, and this book has done a great job bringing it all together in a format that breaks it into very logical steps, supplemented with concrete examples and exercises. It helped me see where I needed to improve as a creative writer, as well as expanding my exposure to different writing styles and types.

   The Ultimate Writing Guide
I have used several writing books in the past to help me hone my skills, and none have been as helpful as this book. After working my way through each section of the book, I feel like a master's level course. Janet Burroway does not just lay the rules of writing for us. What she does is explain how to use them in detail. Some of the included stories are so well writting. I learned much just by reading them. Some of the stories were so poignant, they linger with me forever.

I agree with all the other reviews!
Seems like everyone gave this 5 *s, so I am not certain what I can add other than this is simply the best book that any writer can own. Then uses excepts or short stories by known authors as specific examples that illustrate what point she is trying to make. Tie all that in with good, practical exercises at the end of each chapter and you'll see that writing * can be taught *.

Best writing on writing I've read.
This author does what others don 't nearly as well, she blends both skills. She explains the illusive show vs. taller than anyone else. Her attention to the structure of the chapter was also great. This book loved.

   The best
Any student who wants to learn or improve her fiction writing will feel blessed when she comes across this book. Yes, it is expensive, but buy it used. It is worth every penny. Writing Fiction is a comprehensive, informal, practical guide that approaches the elements of fiction writing from a writer's view point of view. It touches on every aspect of the craft - plot, style, characters, dialogue, atmosphere, POV and on and on. Don 't leave home without it!

a must read for fiction writers
This book is a text book, which it reads, but does so in an interesting way. It gives the rules and conventions as well as the exceptions to write fiction from the conception to the dialogue.

An MFA degree in a book.
For a reason, universities use this book as a textbook. It was a requirement in one of my fictitious writing classes. It covers numerous writing topics and tackles them in great detail. It even includes works written by accomplished writers to illustrate the topics covered in the book.
