Book Overview

Yoga Sequencing: Designing Transformative Yoga Classes presents the essential principles and methods for planning and sequencing yoga classes. Addressing one of the most popular topics in the yoga profession, this book offers sixty-seven model sequences of yoga poses (asanas) that cover the broad range of yoga student experience, including multiple sequences for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students; yoga for kids, teens, women across the life cycle, and seniors; classes to relieve depression and anxiety; and sequences for each of the major chakras and ayurvedic constitutions. Each sequence provides guidance for teaching the different breathing (pranayama) and meditation techniques that give yoga its transformative power.

Enhanced with over 2,000 instructional photos and an elaborate guide to the constituent elements of over 150 yoga asanas, the book draws equally from ancient yoga philosophy and contemporary insights into functional anatomy, biomechanics, and kinesiology. The nuanced interrelationships among asanas within and between the seven asana families are explored and the anatomy of opening and stabilizing each pose is explained for sequences designed around specific needs and intentions. A comprehensive appendix includes a glossary of yoga-related terms, an alphabetical asana index with thumbnail photographs of each asana, a class planning worksheet, representative sequences from several popular styles of hatha yoga, and a list of resources for further exploring sequencing and the larger practice of teaching yoga.

   Great book
I've attended a friend's classes and she has great sequences. She told me she got many of them from this book, so I bought it. This book is by far the best. He not only gives good suggestions but he also gives the theory behind them. The book has been hailed as the bible of yoga.

   What's Not To LOVE?
The book is well-thought-out and very practical, Raymond said. It includes equencing for beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes, and each level has options for different focus back bends, hip opening, twists, and forward bends. Other include Core-Awakening, Yoga for Kids, Special Conditions of Women, Yoga for Seniors, and Ayurvedic sequences. The appendix has 16 yoga sequences, each with their own set of steps. As a beginning yoga teacher, this book has been very helpful.

   Great book.
This book is advanced, but with effort, I think it's good for putting together a yoga sequence.

   a must read
This will enhance your yoga practice so much more whether you are an instructor of just someone who wants to practice on their own, said Dr. Goin. The book includes guidelines on how to sequence your own flow.

A great book. Just reading through it and will definitely refer to the sequencing as my yoga instructor takes sequencing out of this book so it is a great referral for home.

   More of the same
The information in the beginning is good, but most of the sequences just seem to be the same poses repeated.

Another excellent resource from Mark Stephens!
This book is highly recommended for teachers, students, and advanced practitioners. As a student and future yoga teacher, I found this book invaluable because it helped me plan authentic sequences for practice and teaching various types of students.

   A Rich resource
AshtangaYoga has helped me immensely with my studies in yoga. The book is an awesome read, said Howard Bloom, co-founder of Sequence. Each chapter is meticulously laid out, with the exception of one or two lines that are often repeated. Identifying asanas (or asanas), from opening a door to a stabilized and counter poses, can be a daunting challenge. The author is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and is pursuing a Masters in Bioinformatics. Whole-genome sequencing for women with special needs: diagnosis of infertility, menopause or bone health. This book also includes chakra sequences, ayurvedic and more. A great book, well written and well-illustrated. Not surprisingly, these photos are among the all-time greats. This is essential for any teacher training program. Thanks, yoga school. He has a very good reputation, said Dr. Paul Dhaliwal of the University of Nottingham.

   Slightly dated in my opinion
While the information was extensive and helpful, I felt this was slightly dated. Many of the sequences did not provide adequate warmup and I felt that many were not appropriate for beginners or even intermediate students, she said. Barrenas has published extensively about injuries sustained doing some of the more aggressive poses. This was not as helpful as I'd hoped.

A beautifully written and very informative book.
After a year of training, I realized I wanted to get a better grasp on sequencing. This book, and the Mark Stephens (creator of the Yoga Sequencing Deck) that goes with it, were incredibly helpful and I can see that as my knowledge grows so will my understanding of the concepts. There are a lot of useful links here, Sosa said. I would like to think that we have to balance the needs of beginners and more advanced students, Raymond said. An excellent book, well written and very informative. Thanks for the introduction.
