Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

David McRaney's first book, You Are Not So Smart, evolves from his wildly popular blog of the same name. A mix of popular psychology and trivia, McRaney's insights have struck a chord with thousands, and his blog-and now podcasts and videos-have become an internet phenomenon.
Like You Are Not So Smart, YOU ARE NOW LES DUMB is grounded in the idea that we all believe ourselves to be objective observers of reality-except we're not. But that's okay, because our delusions keep us sane.
Expanding on this premise, McRaney provides eye-opening analyses of fifteen more ways we fool ourselves every day, including:

  • The Misattribution of Arousal (Environmental factors have a greater effect on our emotional arousal than the person right in front of us)
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy (We will engage in something we don't enjoy just to make the time or money already invested worth it)
  • Deindividuation (Despite out best intentions, we practically disappear when subsumed by a mob mentality)
McRaney also reveals the true price of happiness, why Benjamin Franklin was such a badass, and how to avoid falling for our own lies. This smart and highly entertaining audiobook will be wowing listeners for years to come.

   Delightful Primer on Cognitive Bias
It is better to read this primer than to read Thinking Fast and Slow. The writer is brilliant. His writing is good. The tone strikes a balance between erudition and entertainment. His presentation is unlarded with political correctness and sales pitches for his personal politics. He covers a lot of the same findings and experiments that other pop science books on evolutionary psychology do, so I can't say I have learned anything new, but he does so with great clarity of thought and purpose. If you' re interested in how your brain works, this is a good place to start. I know it's not a bug, but I think I'm dumb now. There is a feature.

This, if you believe in it, is a powerful and empowering tool.
I like what the book tells me. I make afformations that are supposed to be the one they give you by the end of the book, but they never do. It's not hard to figure it out. This is a powerful and empowering tool if you believe it. I can feel the difference between my inner reactions and my outer ones. Whenever I am driving or killing time between meetings, I use it every day. Many people have said that this book is also used as a marketing tool for other afformation products. I wish they could go back to the days when they would give you a great book and then use the last page to promote other books from the author. The editors should stop promoting this kind of marketing because it's a mistake.

   Transformative and entertaining
This book has changed me. I find myself better able to notice when I'm falling for classic cognitive mistakes if I have a clear view of how my thinking goes astray. The writing is easy to understand. The examples he picks are clear. It is easy to understand his point. It doesn't read like a dry academic paper, but I like the fact that it seems well researched. I cannot think of a criticism. The book is what it says it's going to be.

   Love the book
I debated on this one, but I don't give out five stars very often. Love the book. The author made it look like a novel. His ability to apply the neuroscience complex to everyday life and choices is perfect. An interesting read. After I got it, I highlighted several passages and saved more pages. When all the political games start unfurling this year, it's a good time to recommend anyone wanting to be a little less dumb.

Could be written better. Wait for discount
There are lots of interesting facts about different studies. I liked the benjamin franklin effect part, but the author was too cynical and nhilistic for my taste. There were obvious flaws in the logic presented. The author was too busy trying to be clever with his wording and instead of coming off as funny, it just seemed pretentious, so I wouldn't buy this book at its full price. If you can get it at a discount, I would recommend reading it. If the author was someone else, I would have liked it more. If you read the chapter titles you can find a better way to get the information.

   I'm not less dumb, but...
The author tried to include the title in the text, but you could always tell it was coming to a close. It was a good read for a layperson. It would be trite for an experienced psychologist.

   Absolutely fantastic!
I found a hard copy of this book at Barnes and Noble four months ago and immediately bought it. I loved this book so much that I have been reading it ever since. The slow pace was due to enjoying the information. I have yet to find the hard cover that I lost a little while ago. Since I liked this book so much, I had to buy it here to be able to read it again, since I scoured my house and backpack for it. I highly recommend this book!
