Book Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELER - A Best Book of 2021: Entertainment Weekly, Good Morning America, Wall Street Journal, and more

From the indie rockstar of Japanese Breakfast fame, and author of the viral 2018 New Yorker essay that shares the title of this book, an unflinching, powerful memoir about growing up Korean American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity.

In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought Read More chevron_right

   Amazing
A beautiful heartfelt story about a complicated relationship between a mother and daughter who loved each other very much. I loved everything about this book.

   Great Read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The writing was wonderful, and I especially love how she wove the themes of food and culture into her story.

   i am crying
I related a lot to this. It is touchingly written. I am impressed with the breadth of Michelle's artistry and how it can be expressed through music, words, and food.

Great read, though it made me hungry
Anyone who has lost a parent should read this book. She shows us how to deal with a loss. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Korean food. I wanted to go to the nearest Korean restaurant after reading her descriptions of eating and preparing Korean food.

I Get The Hype, Wasn't For Me (3.75 Stars)
I heard good things about this memoir and picked it up. It was mentioned as a memoir of the year many times. I understand why people would say this is a memoir of the year, but I don't think the book was good for me. The memoir isn't about the whole life of Zauner. This memoir focuses on how she dealt with her mom's death and how she coped with it. I wanted to know more about her culture. I don't feel like I got a lot. One reviewer said that they felt like the memoir was written for the author. I didn't feel invested in the story. There were some parts that made me feel better. Overall, not bad. Not good either.

   An inspiring read
Painfully telling the truth at all times to boost those private revelations. It is very much appreciated.

Very morose, introspective, and just sad
It doesn't happen often that I want to throw a book across the room, but that's how I felt about this one. I was not happy with her lists of specific Korean foods with no background in the culture, the foods listed were just words on the page. This was a maudlin attempt by the author to convince herself that she wasn't a neglectful daughter. The scene in which she put the arm of an animal in her mouth was the worst. I flung the book in that scene because it was casual and cruel to an animal. On YouTube, there will be a explainer.

A memoir that blends culture, cuisine and creativity
One woman's journey to find her own creative voice while assimilating the culture of her mother's Korean heritage is the subject of a fascinating memoir. I hope Zauner continues to write.
